Edited and published this memoir for Dr. Mary Lindsay Elmendorf, born April 13, 2017. She majored in Sociology at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill among the earliest women to attend the school. Married her college sweetheart, John Elmendorf, with whom she took the first set of Putney School students to San Miguel de Allende. In 1942, she was the second American to buy property in that Mexican city. John served as a conscientious objector in WW II and Mary was among the volunteers with AFSC who received the Nobel Peace award in 1947. Her achievements continued in this manner she described as "breaking glass ceilings" in fields related to water, women, environment, peace, and education.
